  1. Title: Please Understand Me, Character & Temperament Types
APA Reference: Keirsey, D & Bates, M. (1984). Please understand me, character & temperament types, 5th Ed.. Del Mar, CA: Prometheus Nemesis Book Company.
Summary: The authors insist that not everybody goes through the same phases of growth to maturity. Abandon the Pygmalion Project.
My Comments:This is one of my top ten books, which sit on my desk within arm’s reach. I was first exposed to the Myers-Briggs personality type indicator as a cadet entering the Coast Guard Academy in 1988. As in INTJ I’m a scientist – I watch things and try to discern patterns. As such I need data, lots of data. This book first came to be in the mid 1990s and after pulling in from the shelf it has been part of my permanent collection from that day forward. I really wish people would wear their MBTI on their lapels, because it would really help me understand them! Since they don’t, try to evaluate each person I meet based on these criteria. I seem to be getting better at the evaluation (or just better at getting along with people). As an INTJ I’m part of 1% of the population, so the way I think is not like most of those around me. That makes me valuable as well as handicapped. Read the book to figure out how you go at things, and how to best work with people like me!
