The New Wealth of Organizations.

  1. Title: Intellectual Capital, The New Wealth of Organizations.
APA Reference: Stewart, T. A. (1999). Intellectual capital, the new wealth of organizations. New York: Doubleday.
Summary: The first book that shows how to turn the untapped knowledge of an organization into its greatest competitive weapon. Knowledge – not natural resources, machinery, or financial capital – has become the most important factor in economic life. Through practical advice, stories, and case histories, Stewart reveals how organizations and individuals can create and use the knowledge assets they need.
My Comments: This was a fun book. At this stage of the game (2007), we have internalized many of the things Stewart was discussing in 1999, such as watching the knowledge chain as the primary place to improve efficiency (and save or make money). Just take a look at Walmart’s global supply chain, or what UPS is doing in the goods shipment space. The beauty of this treatment is how well the prose spans individual examples by going for generalities. But they are accessible generalities. If your business is building value anywhere in business, you won’t be disappointed by this book.
