Since the very first years of the Idlers existence, The Griswold Inn has echoed with their cheery voices lifted (along with glasses) in song.

Many a new Idler has found himself before a crowd of boisterous and demanding yachtsmen, called upon to render up a stirring love ballad or a hearty halyard song. The annual fall initiation is witness to just such 'trials by fire', with the new chantymen forced to perform to the high Idlers standards with a scant two or three rehearsals under their belts. If they can muster the straw and rise to the occasion, their efforts are rewarded with a formal presentation of the covetted IDLER'S PIN.

Even veterans long for the frequent return visits throughout the year, a time to relax from the pressures of studies and truly explore the subtle nuances of the Idler's unoffical motto: "Wine, Women, Song - what more could you want?" Seasonned Idlers have been observed at tables in the covered bridge room or at the bar itself with quill and parchment in hand, composing new and mysterious verses inspired by the exquisite yaching atmosphere.

Such was the case one fall afternoon in 1990 when Ed Beale (I'92) sat and composed the Idlers tribute to their favorite pub: the bar song of The Griswold Inn. Presented in a debut performance on April 26, 1991 to rave reviews, "The Griswold Inn" showcased the best mix of all that makes Idlers music great. Then-owner Bill Winterer was on hand to witness the event, as well as several members of the Connecticut State Legislature and Coast Guard Academy Brass. A framed copy of the score and lyrics was signed by each of the debut performers and affixed to the wall behind the piano in the bar, where it still hangs today.
