Hi everyone. I am finally back on line. Jennifer and I have settled into our delightfully tacky, yet refined, CG housing "cell block" at Rio Bayamon (that's Gantsec to you main-landers). Strannge place this Puerto Rico. If you walk across the street, almost any car will stop and let you cross. If you are tying to change lanes when driving though, be ready to bump fenders. Anyway, I took command of OCRACOKE in July and have been out guarding against the Pirates of the Caribbean for 2 months (no, not the Disney ride, El Caribe). Operations are fast paced here, we will finish our year with almost 2,400 underway hours. Since my arrival, ive gotten to see a few Academy folk. Jeff Stewart (CO FARALLON) pulled in this week, and I saw Mark Fedor ('91, CO MONOMOY) last month. Geoff Deas is a Marshall and CG Reserve here, so we hang out often. Eric Gleason and Joe Buzzella are here now, deploying to MOHAWK (CDR S. How's boat). My wife Jennifer and I are expecting our first baby in February. Because we didn't want to go through this alone, I bribed a high ranking member at FDCC Lant and now they're sending Wade Gesele down here to manage the major construction projects at GANTSEC. Wade and Maite get her in 2 weeks, so our wives can go through their pregnancies together. Wade will be staying with me for a while, so you can send E-mails for him to me, and I will forward. Many WMEC's and D1/D5 WPB's come through here, so give me a shout if you're on one of them. Our new e-mail is JenniferJim.Passarelli@worldnet.att.net, (787) 701-1737. See ya.
I agree. I liked the old format better and am willing to donate a couple Jeffery Dollars, oops sorry, too much time at Toys R Us. Anyway, I'll donate some cash to get the old format back. I think it was easier and faster to use. Later, Karl
Congrats Jim! Seems like we were all just at your wedding - time flies!
Hey Al! Congrats on the new job!!! Glad to see you finally get to get hot & wet like you've been wanting. Somehow I lost your email address so figured I'd reply on the bullentin board. Tell Cheryl & Trenton hello from the Riddles! Kevin & Steph
We'll for those of you who might of heard what some of you would consider a vicious rumor that I was giving up my "single" status, I'm here to report that it is not a rumor, but indeed a factual statement. I'll have to credit (fault?) Ski for this one. When I got off the plane in Barcelona, I was greeted with a bigger than life statue of Father Palinski, the father of the Pinto. Seems that Ford didn't exactly table the "bring back the Pinto" campaign Ski has been so hard at work on. While the executives at Ford realized America wasn't ready for something so big just yet, they saw a potential for Spain to be the start of the re-birth campaign for the Pinto. Ski went over to Spain with the pretense of "running with the bulls", but actually ended up convincing the Spainairds that a Pinto was related to the bull, and that the Spainards would worship this automobile the way the did "el toro". I had heard Ski used some deductive reasoning along the lines of: a pinto is a bean, beans produce gas, gas smells like sh--, specifically bull-sh--, which comes from a bull. Well the idea took off, and everyone is driving Pintos with a jiggling "hula-girl" in the likeness of our very own Mike Palinski on their dashboards. Well needless to say, I was taken aback when presented this sight. So I initially figured it was one of two things, either a very bad dream, or the end of the world was near. Either way, I took it as a sign that I needed to get married, so I proposed to my future wife in Spain. Thanks Ski!! My bride to be name is Marion. She is a German citizen who I met right here in Newport News while she was working for a branch of the company she worked for in Germany. We are now in the process of putting together the paperwork to get her back to the states so that we can get married. If anyone out there has any advice on how to expedite the paperwork through INS I'd appreciate hearing from you. I hope all is well with the rest of you. Keep the class up to date. Scott
Congratulations Scott!! Very Cool. Sorry I can't help with INS. Karl
Thanks again to Ed for keeping up the class site. I'll add my vote to go back to the old notes format, and will send the check to help out. I'm in San Diego and loving it. The weather is awesome, and it's a great place to operate a patrol boat. I moved LONG ISLAND from Monterey in July after change of command, and have been here ever since. Geoff Gagnier moors up next door on TYBEE, and lives just down the road in Pacific Beach. We both came down from Seattle, so the sun is taking some getting used to. For the aviators, Airsta SD should be high on your list! Only 378's for the rest of us, CHASE and HAMILTON just moved down. I would stay if I could, I'm not sure about those choices though. Speaking of Seattle, Jim Moran is still there as OPS on MELLON, we did ALPATs together for one year. We were surprised to see Kevin Smythe (EO STORIS) in Dutch Harbor during one portcall. Give me a shout if you're contemplating a trip in this direction. Good luck to everyone.
Hey folks. Just checking in from the Philly area and wanted to share some good news and put the word out about my company to anyone looking to get out. First a quick Knight family update. Emily and I are both very busy and enjoy the rare time we have together. She is still working for Prentice Hall Publishing and is teaching at two local colleges at night. For fun I'm coaching pee wee football three nights a week with games on Friday night or Saturday morning. The team's website is http://www.one.to/norchesterredknights/ Our team is pretty lousy but it is fun molding the minds of 9 and 10 year olds. I'm also busy studying for my NASD Series 7 (General Securities Representative) license exam which I will be taking in October. I just accepted a new postion within my company that requires this license. My new position is the Director of Marketing for the Community Trust Group at SEI Investments. My new division sells SEI's asset management services (primarily the SEI family of mutual funds and SEI investment programs) and our trust technology outsourcing product to community banks and independent trust companies throughout the United States. This division of SEI allows community banks to completely outsource their trust and investment operations. The market for trust and investment management services is expanding rapidly and will continue to do so as demographic changes in the U.S. affect the transfer of individual wealth. As a result, SEI continues to realize growth in the community bank marketplace, as many small banks are competing to become the full service provider of investment management services to this emerging (and wealthy) market segment. I'm very excited about the new opportunity! Now for the SEI pitch- As a company we are experiencing tremendous growth and as a result our stock price has grown almost 200% in the past two years. SEI has a great corporate culture and has been successful in attracting numerous Academy grads and former military officers. We have numerous opportunities on the technology and financial services side of the company. If you know anyone that is interested in living near Philadelphia and wants to work for a global asset management and technology services firm please have them contact me at aknight@seic.com. A listing of our exisiting job vacancies can be found at http://www.seic.com/employ.html. One final praise. I just received word that CDR Hank Teuton (Swab Summer Honor Training Guy) just got the results of his bone marrow biopsy performed three weeks ago. The results showed NO abnormal cells and he is now free of leukemia! I'm sure he and Betsy appreciated all of your prayers! Well thats about all the news fit to print. If anyone is ever out near Philadelphia and wants to get together please give me a call at (H) 610.792.3789. Cheers!
It's that time for another shameless plug of the only true punk Coast Guard band that I know of...4 years and running strong. Any class of '92 alumni living in the New England area (or anywhere else, for that matter) that might be interested in a mini-reunion during the weekend of October 16, please respond to my e-mail address or (860) 437-8688. Sean and I are back in New London; he is teaching Oceanography at our dear alma mater and I'm doing the stay-at-home-Mom thing with a photo album business on the side. All is well, and we hope to hear from anyone who wants to get together. So, please pass the word! Regards, Kat
Laura and I are dissapointed we just moved from New England (Boston) and can't make it. We've moved to L.A., which is basically the anti-Boston but has been fun so far. I'm finally going to finish my Ph.D. at UCLA (cognitive neuroscience, a subfield of psychology) and Laura is Safety and Occuptional Health Officer at ISC San Pedro. For those on the west coast, Laura and I have been talking about making a trip to Las Vegas to renew our vows at The Holy Elvis church, so if anybody is interested in also having a different kind of west coast reunion in Vegas let us know. Cheers, Scott
I actually like the new format. It gives a bit more flexibility to the reader. For all of you that prefer the old, read in order of entry format, try the All By Date button. Granted you don't get the "whole story" at once, but at least you get an idea for what the "freshest tidbits" are. For a discussion thread I find the newer format easier to follow, I can't count the number of times I had to read through several months to find the original point that someone brought up. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!
Wondering if anyone out there has heard from our old Honduran friend in the last couple of years. The last I heard from him was spring of '96. Since then the phone number I had for his parents is no longer in service and I'm getting no responses by sending mail to his parent's house. Just curious how our old friend is doing. See ya, Kevin
This sounds like a great idea, with many people 'in town' or close) for Dave Godfrey's wedding in RI. I think the ceremony is in the AM, so if we get together Saturday afternoon/evening, that might work out. I'll be up for another wedding on the 17th, so you can all meet Michelle. See you soon! Wedding Page.
Kat, Sean, et al. Sorry I won't make it this weekend, but I will be down in the NL area with WRANGELL 26-27 October. My best to all at the mini-reunion. Dale
Greetings from San Juan, Puerto Rico. I am sitting at home because of hurricane Jose. It appears it will miss us, but they decided to let everyone stay at home. So, as an civil engineer I thought I was pretty much isolated from being jerked around by the CG. After receiving orders to FDCC Lant in Norfolk, VA. I soon received a phone call asking/telling me my billet would be best served in San Juan. The day before my final day of work at CEU, my orders showed up - hey puzzle palace guys what the hell goes on up there. It appear everyone had to justify spending a few extra dollars to send me down here - but it would be completey acceptable to fly from VA and stay down here weeks at a time and rack up some serious per diem. Well I finally showed up in August. The CG has about $20 million worth of construction work going on or scheduled over the next two years. I was sent down here to be a big baby sitter for the contractors. Construction practices down here are very unigue (read poor) - my paradigm has quickly shifted. This will be great experience for me, so all is not bad. I will try to take advantage of the Carribean while I'm here. If your thinking of a job down here - drop me a line and I will give you the scoop. Right now the base is a dump because of all the work and the age of the buildings. Give it 2-3 years and this place should be nice. My wife, Maite, and I are doing well and our first child is due in January. Before we moved down here we took a nice vacation and stayed with many friends. Got to see Tim and Natalie Opstrup and their new son Tyler. Saw Lee and Leigh Boone and thier son Grayson (he is the next Mark McQuire) Saw Larae Malinauskas (Joe was U/W, but saw him last weekend on a port call in San Juan) and their son Zack. Saw Ben and Pam Davis and son Josh (not 100% sure of the name). With Jim and Jen Passarelli and Geof Deas down here and many class mates stopping by on port breaks - this is a great way to see people. So if your heading down give us a call and we will show you around. Dave Ramacini was in last week on the Key Largo. He reports the homeport change to Key West went smooth, but he met a girl while in Savannah and the weekend road trips are racking the mileage up on his car. Our new e-mail is wmgesele@worldnet.att.net - Ed please update this on the page. Best to everyone, Wade
Wade - I spent some time dealing with the contractors on the west side of Puerto Rico, and I agree with your assessment. Hope you get a chance to enjoy the islands. If you get the chance, Tortola and Barbados are two of the prettiest islands in the whole chain. I highly recommend them. I also dealt with GANTSEC a lot and you have my heartfelt sympathy. Take care and go hit the rumshacks and pincho stands. Buenos Tarde. Whit
I think I agree with Quenton Maddux - see his New format thread. I like the new format better. Yes it takes a little longer to navigate if you're just surfing all the topics, but following one topic around is much easier. And you can run the topic down to exhaustion before moving onto the next item of discussion, rather than jumping through 20 different e-mails or so. It seems better to me after getting a little reoriented. However, if we decide to go back to the old format, I'd be willing and happy to pitch in some bucks for the webmeister. - Whit
You are probably wondering, "How the hell does Ted Joyner have a Job opportunity"? Well, after 1 1/2 years at Air Products I have found myself in a Management position. I am the Production Manager at a manufacturing plant in Allentown PA. I am about to hire a Production Supervisor to replace myself. Air Products is a very large corporation that is on the fast track. Last year our sales were over 5 Billion Dollars. There are about 15,000 employees with Air Products through out the world. SEMC in Allentown, is a great entry point into Air Products. For those of you who hate the Military OER system and promotion system. Air Products is the place for you. They reward you for the hard work you do. Use myself as an example, in a years time I was promoted to management. If you are interested, E-Mail me or call me at 610-481-3809 for more details. This is a great opportunity!
